The Puritans believed in hard work.... in making money legally and lawfully. Prosperity wasn't the problem.... the problem in the text came from the names in Old Scratch's graveyard, men who'd become wealthy by questionable means, men who'd made their deal with the devil. It isn't wealth the Puritans shunned, it was the hypocrisy of some of the Puritan leaders, who'd gained their positions by ill-gotten means.
