How essential is the setting to the story Tom Walker? Could the story have taken place elsewhere? why or why?

In my opinion, the setting is not essential. Over the years, this same story has been told in different ways, with different characters, and different settings. None-the-less, the main part of the plot always remains the same, and that is the cost of selling your soul to the devil.
