The relationship between Tom and his wife is not idyllic, and their feelings are anything but loving. The one thing they did have in common, however, was greediness. In fact, the two were so greedy that they consistently conspired "to cheat each other." Their home is described as a "den of discord," filled with numerous "fierce" arguments.
