Why and how does Robert Stevens die?

Stevens dies of inhalation anthrax. His stomach hurt, then he ran a fever and soon went into convulsions. The doctors performed a spinal tap on him, and the fluid came out cloudy. He then goes into a coma and goes into cardiac arrest. The spores from the disease grow explosively in lymph and blood.
