Parris is upset initially because he feels his reputation will be damaged by the actions of the girls in the forest and by the fact that Abby appears to have been in the middle of it and Betty seems bewitched. He is generally upset with the community because they do not want to follow his desires for such things as golden candlesticks and paying him what he feels is a good salary.
