why is Hale even here if he has already denounced the court? and what id Elizabeth's reaction to their proposal?

Hale wants to save John and the rest to be hung. Although he has denounced the court, he feels he is in part responsible for this whole tragic mess. Hale believes telling a lie for the court is worth the lives of innocent people.
