Why does Proctor compliment the dish when he has just added seasoning to the stew?

The Proctors are having difficulties in their marriage, as a direct result of his infidelity. When his wife serves him he tells her the food is "well seasoned". This makes Elizabeth happy and shows that John is trying to please her.
