Why does John tear up his confession,thereby sealing his own death warrant?

John can't destroy his name. He already compromised himself over his infidelity to his wife. Now he can't publicly compromise his name to a false court and be a part of the travesty of justice that has taken place. In response to why he won't just sign and save himself, Proctor yells out "All I have is my name."
