This depends when in the play that we examine Hale's attitude towards witchcraft. Initially he takes his scholarly thorough approach to it. This is his job and he takes it seriously. His attitude changes as the play goes on. Hale sees the lies and hypocrisy that envelopes the town. He sees that old vendettas being settled by neighbours using witchcraft as a pretence for settling scores. In addition he sees the Witch Court validating their own existence through "hunting" innocent people.
