What evidence does Parris give that the townspeople do not support the trials?

Parris reminds the court that both Rebecca Nurse and John Proctor are well loved and respected memers of the community.... that the people will not be happy seeing them hung for acts they do not believe. Parris suggests that their executions be postponed on the basis that so few people attended Proctor's excommunication.
