Danforth is trying to defend the sanctity of his court. This court intimidates everyone because of the arbitrary power it has to ruin people's lives or even kill them. He links the court with God to validate his sense of truth. Of course the court has nothing to do with God. Danforth needs to crate the church connection to validate his job and the court's importance.
