Ruth's parents are paranoid. That has to rub off on poor Ruth. Anne is obsessed with birthing dead babies. She sends Ruth to Tituba in order to conjure spirits of her babied. Thomas thinks that people are taking land from him or he is trying to steal land from others. Together this dynamic duo exudes paranoia and negative energy. It is no wonder that Ruth feels disturbed.
