The Puritans had an extremely narrow and literal interpretation of the Bible. Passages that were meant as metaphors or parables were taken as at face value. They used scripture to justify their own self-interest and settle petty arguments with each other. They used fear of scripture as to control and intimidate each other. Reverend Paris was especially adept at such things.
