John Proctor is a farmer in Salem, Proctor is intelligent and he is the voice of reason amidst the hysteria in the town. He seeks to expose Abigail and her followers as frauds. Proctor, however, is compromised by his own moral lapses. He has been having an affair with the young Abigail. He struggles with his own moral crises while trying to uphold his name throughout the play.
