I think their relationship is closer than it has ever been. John has finally taken responsibility for his adultery and is speaking truly from his heart. There is a sense of forgiveness on both sides. John has realized how special Elizabeth is. Elizabeth is content to die for the truth and John is content to die for his restored, in the eyes of his wife, name.
