Abigail is going on about Mary being an evil spirit,

Her wings are spreading! Mary, please, don't, don't—! HALE: I see nothing, Your Honor!

By this point in the play Hale has had enough. He knows that these girls are full of trickery. Although Hale's job relies on the existence of witches, he is a moral man who understands what these false accusations are doing to this community. By act three, Hale attempts, in vain, to discredit Abigail and the girls.
