Why does Mrs. Putnam believe there are witches in Salem?

Mrs. Putnam really wants to believe that there are witches in Salem. Eighth of her nine children have died. Puritan women pride themselves on being fruitful. Rather than blame herself or, God forbid Mr. Putnam, she chooses to go with the whole witchcraft thing and use other people as scapegoats.
