I think the poetry adds a sense of metaphor that young readers can internalize to use in all aspects of their life,

“Dribble, fake, shoot, miss, dribble, fake, shoot, miss, dribble, fake, shoot, miss, dribble, fake, shoot, swish,”

Notice the word "miss" in the line. As in basketball, everybody misses from time to time. Failure is an invitation to try again. I think this poetry adds prose to a sports narrative that young readers can appreciate.
