When Dantes heard digging on the wall by the prisoner, what does this prisoner represent for Dantes? Hope? Since he dug a wall which would be near impossible..

Dantes felt the joy of himan companionship.

Dantès held down his head, that the other might not see how joy at the thought of having a companion outweighed the sympathy he felt for the failure of the abbé’s plans.
