They leave on a smuggling operation to the Leghorn. The execution was unsuccessful as Edmund miraculously freed himself from the cannonball, narrowly escaping death. He doesn't exactly convince the Captain that he's not an escaped prisoner, but the Captain doesn't really care because it's obvious that he's an experienced seaman.
