The plot of The Count of Monte Cristo revolves around the themes of revenge and forgiveness. After his imprisonment, Dantes is determined to revenge himself upon those who've done him wrong. He meticulously plans vengeance against each of his malefactors.... to make them pay a debt for the atrocities they brought upon him, as well as his years of imprisonment. Few of Dantes actions after his escape are enacted for any other reason.
