To what extent is your identity self-determined?

Position paper question that will assess argumentative writing. Asked to write a position paper(analytical argumentative essay).i am taking the position that my identity is not self- determined , using the argument that we are subjected to too many influencing factors.will cite example of Solomon Northup in " 12 Years a Slave". This is an " Intro to Philosophy " unit for an Early Childhood Education degree.
