The Poems of William Blake

The Chimney Sweeper [2]

What is the speaker's tone lines 1-2? In other words, what attitude toward the boy's plight does he seem to be showing?

The tone is very sad and depressing. The speaker relates how mother died when he was a small child and his father sold him into indentured labour as a chimney sweeper. There is also a sense of sad resignation to his life.
