Celie is the main character who is abused by her father and her husband and who ultimately meets, cares for, and forms a relationship with Shug Avery when Shug comes to live with them.

Celie is a 14 years old black girl who is maltreated by her father and isolated from the forms of her happiness and is given to a man called Mr ___ who also continues where Celie's stepfather left by raping and beating Celie up and not treating her like a wife but like a helpless, hopeless, and headless slave.
