This is a patriarchal society where the highest honour for a woman is to become one of the chief's wives. Tasha isn't allowed to go to school so Olivia tries to teach her things. Nettie finds the discrimination gender based rather than ethnic based. Still Nettie is happy to have a hut of her own.
