The Color of Water

Why does Ruth tell James, “God is the color of water”?

I know in the book it says it's because God is a spirit. But I want to know why Ruth thinks God is the color of water.

James is confused about race when he poses this question to his mother. In response to his confusion, Ruth explains that God has no color, He is "the color of water", an image that converges James questions about racial and religious division into something that is clear and universally spiritual - in other words, "human".
