In Chapter 4 James is under a constant confusion of identity and his race. At one point he even punches the son of a Black Panther leader in the face because he fears for his mother's safety. Ruth, however, uses her strong faith in a Christian God transcend negative experiences accepting what she can't change and improving the things that she can.
