Seth is the main character of the story. In this story, Seth recollects his memory of his nine year old self and unfolds the event when he was a kid.

Father's name is unknown in the story. The protagonist describes his father as a strong southern man and an important person to his community. He is a caring father and husband. The protagonist feels very proud of his father.
Sallie
Sallie is the mother of Seth. He remembers her as a brave woman with a less feminine quality.
Stranger
The character of the Stranger is very suspicious in Blackberry Winter. He is not from the place where Seth lives. Seth catches that stranger lurking around his house and starts stalking him out of curiosity.
Jebb
Jebb is Seth's friend who lives in a cabin with his parents on the farm of Seth's father. Jebb grows up to be a bad guy and kills a man, and gets punished.
Dellie
Dellie is the mother of Jebb and works as a cook in Seth's house.
