The Chrysalids

The chrysalids questions (the book)

1. Can you see reasons for why the people of Waknuk’s have certain attitudes towards deviation

2. From what we know about David so far, why do you feel that he helped Sadie on the beach?

3. Why do you think David might be a person who questions the way things are?

4. What do David’s dreams suggest to you about his character?

The word “chrysalid” means a state into which the larvae of most insects pass before becoming complete or perfect insects. The chrysalid takes in no food and is inactive. In general, the word can mean a sheltered state of growth. Consider this idea for the next few questions:
a. What are the people in Waknuk sheltering themselves from?
b. What is the complete or “perfect” state that they are trying to achieve? ( / 2)

c. What are some clues that things in Waknuk society are improving to a more “perfect” state?
d. What are some clues that things in Waknuk society are getting worse, and moving Waknuk away from being a “perfect” state? (
Would you personally want telekinetic powers? What might be a positive aspect of having this

I think this very closed society is ruled by fear and paranoia of anything that is different. They use a very narrow interpretation of their Bible to justify their fear and paranoia. This enables them to exclude and insulate themselves from other living beings and organisms. This attitude becomes a vicious cycle of entitlement for all that is deemed "normal" and punishent which is deemed "deviant".
