What could happened on Rueven's eye that could impair his sight?

(located in chapter 2) Rueven's father tells him about it when he visits him

A piece of glass was lodged in the eye next to the pupil. Even though the surgeon successfully removed the glass, there is a danger that when the wound heals scar tissue will form and spread over the pupil blocking Reuven's vision.
