What is the "christening’’ mentioned in the eighth chapter?

The narrator mentions that even though no children have been born in almost 25 years, there were still people who continued to christen various live beings to leave the impression that everything was alright. For example, in the sixth chapter, a small group of people can be seen going towards the Church with two kittens in their hands. The group then christened the kittens just as parents used to do with their children in the past. This method is used as a coping mechanism by the people who never stopped wanting children. While the action may seem childish, it did provide the remaining humans with some type of consolation.
