Holden believes that the adult world is vile and corrupt. He strives to maintain his own child-like purity in a world that won't allow him to. One example of this is when he witnesses a particulalrly vulgar phrase carved onto the wall of his younger sister's elementary school. He tries and fails to get rid of it, and swears that the profanity was placed there by a "perverty bum," and is so angered by this, he fantasizes killing the man. This scene proves that Holden believes that childhood innocence is being infected by adulthood and all of its vulgarity.
