Holden, of course, feels that New York is "phony". Holden is depressed by these girls with silly hats who travel from far away to be sucked in by the culture of entertainment. Holden encourages their excitement by claiming to have seen Gary Cooper. The he loathes them for their enthusiasm. Holden sees the show as a spectacle meant for the weak minded.
