Holden does mature throughout the novel but only slightly.

-Holden tries to protect the vulnerable like his sister Phoebe, as well as children in the world in general: he wants to protect them as he couldn't protect Allie.

-Mr. Antolini tells Holden to consider going back to school and later on does think about it.

-I think a major realization is when Holden takes Phoebe to the amusement park. He puts her on the carousel and as Holden watches Phoebe, he sees her grab for the gold ring, and he becomes terrified she will get hurt. But Holden realizes, “the thing is with kids is, if they want to grab for the gold ring, you just have to let them do it, and not say anything…” (211). At this point, Holden realizes he himself needs to take a chance on adulthood.

-Holden realizes when he passed out at the museum that he is okay and has more strength than he thought he had to make it through life.

-Holden understands that if the ducks at the park can make it from season to season, perhaps he can too.
