The Catcher in the Rye

Old Spencer tells Holden that life is a game one must play according to the rules. Do you agree with old Spencer? Why or why not? How is Holden not playing by the rules?

In life, there are rules everyone must follow. These include expectations, showing respect, acting responsibly, and even more importantly..... taking responsibility.

The second part of your question calls for your opinion. There is no right or wrong answer.

As for the last part of your question, Holden does not play by the rules. He makes his own rules as he goes along and makes excuses for himself along the way. Everyone else is to blame..... nothing is real..... Holden's reality and perception of what is genuine or phony are defined by his own lack of reality.
