The Catcher in the Rye

How does Holden prove that he is not as "stupid" as he would like people to believe?

Between chapters 5 - 9, around the time he decides to leave Pincely, to the time hes at the bad hotel in NY, how does he prove that he is not as "stupid" as he would like people to believe?

I'm not sure what you are getting at here. Holden usually feels he is smarter and superior to people. I never found him trying to act  "stupid". He certainly acted disconnected to society and disenfranchised but I do not see "stupid".
