Ta-Nehisi Coates, born in Baltimore in 1975, was heavily influenced by his father Paul, who was a member of the Black Panther Party and a Vietnam veteran. Paul educated himself on history and other topics, and he was an avid reader. Cheryl, Coates’ mother, was a teacher. Coates attended Howard University and graduated in 1993. After graduating from Howard, Coates went on to start his journalism career. He moved to New York and wrote for The Washington City Paper, The Village Voice, and Time.
