The Canterbury Tales

Why is the old man in “The Pardoner’s Tale” being truthful when he tells the rioters that he left Death “there today/Under a tree, and there you’ll find him”?

because he knows the golden florins will mean death for the men
because he saw Death murdering people under the tree
because he is a wizard who can see people’s deaths in the future
because he believes Death left the golden florins under the tree
