Chaucer is regarded as the "father of English poetry" and a symbol of the middle ages. One of the reasons he is so important is that he wrote in English.... not French. He was, in fact, the first to write in the vernacular. As a result, the Canterbury Tales was one of the first major works in literature written in English.
