Parvana says this is an argument her parents frequently have. Explain her mother’s side of the argument and her father’s side of the argument. Why is there such a difficult position to be in?

“’If we had left Afghanistan when we had the chance, I could be doing my work!’‘We are Afghans. This is our home. If all the educated people leave, who willrebuild the country?’”

In context, Parvana's father wants to remain in his homeland.... he wants to be there if change is evoked, he wants to rebuild. Parvana's mother, however, is isolated and unable to work. She cannot write, she cannot use her talents for change, and she worries for the safety of her family. She wants to leave. After her father is arrested, Parvana's mother sinks deeper into depression.
