There is not much to be happy about. Bruno is uprooted from his pleasant childhood and thrust into a strange small house in the countryside. His neighbors happen to be locked up in a death camp. Bruno also has to put up with a father that feels distant and the socio-path Lt. Kotler who enjoys intimidating people. All the sympathetic people in his life are abused and terrified.
