What does naive mean and how does it apply in chapter 12?

In this context, Bruno's naivety would be defined as innocence. Bruno doesn't understand most of what Shmuel shares with him because he is oblivious to Shmuel's circumstances. He puts together the things they have in common, but he cannot comprehend the drastic differences.
