How did friendship influence Bruno's choices

Bruno's friendship with Shmuel led him to make a few unconcious choices that affected his life. His decision to socialize with Shmuel near the fence put him at risk of angering his father. Interacting with Shmuel in the house, even though Shmuel advised against it, led to Shmuel's punishment, whereas, crossing over into the fenced area to change places cost Bruno his life.
