Gretel and Bruno see the camp, though, they do not understand what it is.

There were small boys and big boys, fathers and grandfathers and perhaps a few uncles too. And some of those people who live on their own on everybody's road but don't seem to have any relatives at all. They were everyone.

And one final thought came into her brother's head as he watched the hundreds of people, ... all of them--were wearing the same clothes as each other: a pair of grey striped pajamas with a grey striped cap on their heads.

Bruno and Gretel saw Auschwitz concentration camp, without realizing what was it, from the window. They saw a high wire fence running in either direction. There was a barbed wire with sharp spikes on top of this fence. The ground had no greenery and was made of a sand-like substance. There were large square single-storied buildings with a few low huts.

There were many people moving around within that wire-fenced compound. These people were of different ages, from children to very old, but there were no girls. Most of the people were moving around doing various activities. There were some soldiers around leading these people to carry out various jobs. A lot of people were on crutches and many had bandaged heads. They also saw a number of children being shouted upon by soldiers and felt as if they were rehearsing for something. All the children looked very filthy. Also, the people of all ages there were wearing the same clothes, a grey striped pyjamas with a grey striped cap on their heads.
