Like many Nazi villain, Bruno's father is selective about who he is kind to. He follows Nazi ideology but retains personal biases like his affection for Maria. These conflicts often surface later on if the character lasts that long. His affection for his family is always measured and formal. I don't really think Bruno's father knows exactly how to reconcile what he does with his own personal life.
