why is it better than saying that "his hsnd bled"?

a bandaged hand fell out of his coat sleeve and cherries of blood were seeping through the wrapping... the cherries of blood had grown into plums

This gives the reader a more graphic image of the kind of wound that could be suffered in war. It adds a sense of realism in the harshness of war.
