Why does Rudy make things difficult for himself with the Nazi Youth organization?

Why is it that throughout Part 5, Rudy made things so hard for himself?

Rudy does not agree with the Nazis or the Hitler youth. He finds them mean and overbearing. Rudy has a kind nature, not a cruel one. Rudy deliberately tries to resist being part of the Hitler youth. An example of this is when Rudy deliberately gets disqualified for false starts on purpose. He does not want to be an elite Hitler youth athlete.
