Why did Max wait so long to reveal his illness to the family?

Max believed that revealing his sickness would worry the family, and he didn't want to burden them any further. Max hoped that he'd get better before anyone noticed, that way he wouldn't have to reveal it at all, but Liesel's snowman venture put an end to that wish, as his condition worsened.
