What other actions does Hans take which might risk his family’s safety?

On page 196, Hans paints over the anti-Semitic slur on door of Joel Kleinman. “A new slur was painted on the door within sixteen hours”. As a result, Hans is denied membership to the Nazi Party, which risks his family’s safety.

On page 421 Hans gives bread to dying old man, a “small, futile miracle” that gave some recognition of old man’s humanity. The consequence of his action is that Max must leave.

Death refers to Hans as “the idiot” and his action as “stupid kindness” (page 426). Hans calls himself stupid, an idiot (page 429).

What other actions does Hans take which might risk his family’s safety?

Hans offers to let Max hide out in his basement.
