There is so much symbolism in this book it's difficult to pick just a few.

The accordion starts off as a symbol of hope and comfort. The accordion reminds Liesel of Hans and the comforts of home and family.

Death is fascinated with the colours of the sky. Death thinks each person dies with his/her own unique colour in the sky which symbolizes their essence.

Hitler, the Swastika, and the Nazi Flag are all symbols of evil, tyranny and fascism.
